The Critical Minerals Institute Masterclass: Brazil’s Ionic Clays and Their Impact on the Global Rare Earth Supply Chain

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Toronto, ON – May 22, 2024 – The Critical Minerals Institute (CMI) is excited to announce an upcoming Masterclass focusing on Brazil’s ionic clays as a rich resource for rare earths and their implications for the global rare earth supply chain. The event will feature three distinguished speakers: Nick Holthouse, Stephen Burega, and Constantine Karayannopoulos, and will be moderated by CMI Co-Chair Jack Lifton.

The CMI Masterclass will take place on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, from 7-8 PM (EST) as a virtual event. Featured Speakers:

Nick Holthouse, CEO of Meteoric Resources NL (ASX: MEI), will discuss advancements in the Caldeira Rare Earths Project in Brazil and Meteoric’s strategic partnership with Neo Performance Materials Inc. (TSX: NEO). He will highlight the unique properties of the Ionic Adsorption Clay (IAC) deposit and the recent memorandum of understanding with Neo Performance Materials, which aims to integrate supply chains and support high-efficiency magnet manufacturing.

Stephen Burega, President of Appia Rare Earths & Uranium Corp. (CSE: API | OTCQX: APAAF), will share insights on the heavy rare earths’ discovery at the PCH project in Goiás State, Brazil. He will delve into the significance of the initial desorption test results, which confirm the ionic characteristics of the Ipora granite, and provide details on the mineral resource estimate. This estimate highlights 52 million tons of material with an average grade of approximately 2700 ppm of Total Rare Earth Oxides (TREO), positioning the discovery as potentially one of the most significant heavy rare earth deposits in the Western world.

Constantine Karayannopoulos, Retired – Former Chief Executive Officer at Neo Performance Materials, will address the strategic importance of rare earths, particularly dysprosium and terbium, in high-performance magnets. He will also discuss the broader implications of recent discoveries on global markets and future technological advancements.

CMI Moderator:

Jack Lifton, Co-Chair of the Critical Minerals Institute (CMI) and an industry veteran with extensive expertise in the rare earths sector, will moderate the event. Jack will provide context and facilitate the discussion, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of the topics. This interactive Q&A session will allow attendees to engage directly with the experts and gain valuable insights into the critical minerals sector.

Brazil is a recognized producer and exporter of several mineral commodities. The country has established an exclusive division on critical minerals under the geology department (DIPEME). The division has issued regulations reducing the administrative burden for strategic mining projects, with a special focus on lithium and rare earth elements, while also considering graphite, copper, and cobalt. Brazil contains extremely rich mineral reserves that are only partly exploited, including iron ore, tin, copper, pyrochlore (from which ferroniobium is derived), and bauxite. There are also significant amounts of granite, manganese, asbestos, gold, gemstones, quartz, tantalum, and kaolin (china clay).

This CMI June 4th from 7-8 PM EST Masterclass is a unique opportunity for investors, industry professionals, and stakeholders to gain a deeper understanding of the potential of the ionic clays in Brazil and how these rare earths resources may impact the global rare earth supply chain. To register, click here
