Atlantic Fish Co. Unveils the “World’s First” Cultivated Black Sea Bass Prototype – vegconomist

Cultivated seafood startup Atlantic Fish Co. has developed what it claims to be the world’s first cultivated black sea bass product.
To share their milestone with the world, the team at Atlantic Fish Co. recently held a tasting at the North Carolina Food Innovation Lab (featured image) of its hybrid “bass bite.”
The cultivated black seabass prototype marks a significant step forward in the company’s mission of producing sustainable seafood products using cell culture techniques.

Sustainable protein products
Starting its journey in 2020, the Atlantic Fish Co. claims to have developed proprietary technology to cultivate fish cell lines that can thrive in liquid suspension.
The biotech focuses on developing high-performing fish cell lines of wild-caught species, such as halibut and sea bass. These species are greenhouse gas-intensive due to trawling techniques and unsuitable for aquaculture farms. According to the company, seafood production generates 718 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions yearly.
Atlantic Fish Co. produces what it describes as delicious, authentic seafood without the environmental impact of industrial fishing on marine ecosystems. The company states its next goal is to develop a growth media customized for black sea bass to lower production costs. The startup also announced that it would be hosting product-tasting events for restaurant partners.
The North Carolina Food Innovation Lab has played a crucial role in supporting Atlantic Fish Co.’s pioneering efforts. Bill Aimutis, the lab’s executive director, commented: “Our team at NCFIL is excited about working with Atlantic Fish Co and other companies in this emerging technology area. Atlantic Fish Co recognizes the need to develop sustainable protein products to feed our increasing global population in coming decades.”
